A Boy Named Shayden Just Wanted One Thing: A Friend — Can We Help?

Today, something unexpected happened that reminded me just how important kindness and connection really are. A young boy named Shayden came knocking at my door, looking a little nervous but hopeful. He asked if I knew any kids in the neighborhood around his age—11 or 12—because he really needed some new friends.

“I just wanted to see if you knew any kids around like 11 or 12, maybe. I need some friends, like really bad,” Shayden said quietly, almost like he wasn’t sure if I would understand.

I smiled and tried to think of a few children he might get along with. I mentioned some names, hoping he’d find a connection. But then Shayden’s expression changed. He told me he didn’t hang out with those kids anymore because “they’re bullies.” My heart sank a little. It’s painful to hear a child already feel excluded and hurt by the very people who should be friends.

Trying to lighten the mood, I told him that my daughter was only 2 years old, but if he wanted, he could come over and hang out with her. I expected a polite but hesitant response, but instead, Shayden’s face lit up in a genuine smile.

“Oh great! I enjoy meeting new kids, to be honest, they’re like the best thing ever!” he said with enthusiasm.

That simple moment—the way he said those words—really struck me. Here was a boy who had been through rejection, yet still had an open heart and a desire for connection. It made me think about how many people, young and old, are longing for friendship and acceptance but don’t always know how to ask or where to find it.

Seeing his bravery and kindness, I felt compelled to share his story online. I wrote, “You never know what people are going through until you get a chance to talk to them. This young man is well-mannered, kind, and brave. So, can we help Shayden make some friends?”

Because sometimes, the simplest gestures—an invitation, a conversation, a little understanding—can change a life. Shayden’s story is a reminder that friendship matters deeply, and kindness can make all the difference.

Let’s come together to help Shayden find the friendships he’s been searching for and show him that he’s not alone. After all, isn’t everyone looking for a place to belong?
