As food prices continue to creep up many British households will be searching for a supermarket where they can get the most for their hard earned cash. With shoppers scrabbling for ways to cut down on everyday expenses it has never been so important to ensure your weekly food shop is affordable as it can be.

Higher beef and fresh produce prices has pushed UK food inflation to an annual high. The annual rate of food price rises hit 2.8% this month, after a 2.6% rise in April, according to the latest shop price data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The 12-month high was mainly driven by increases in the cost of fresh produce, including steak.

Fresh foods were the main driver, and red meat eaters may have noticed their steak got a little more expensive as wholesale beef prices increased,” said Helen Dickinson, the BRC chief executive.

Dickinson warned: “If statutory costs continue to rise for retailers, households will have to brace themselves for more difficult times ahead as prices rise faster.”

Amid this pressure, Which? Magazine has revealed the UK’s cheapest supermarket and it is a store beloved by Brits.

For the 18th month in a row, Aldi has been crowned as the UK’s cheapest supermarket.

The consumer watchdog analysed the cost of a basket of 79 branded and unbranded groceries across eight major UK chains.

The average cost of the shopping basket at Aldi was £135.95 in April 2025, £48 cheaper than Waitrose, which was the most expensive at £184.19.

Aldi’s Chief Commercial Officer, Julie Ashfield, said: “The Which? analysis once again reiterates our message that if shoppers want to save money on groceries, then Aldi is the only place to shop.”

Coming in second place was Lidl, with a Plus membership basket costing £136.64, and regular prices just a penny more.

Asda ranked fourth at £150.06 with Tesco following closely behind with its Clubcard prices at £151.11.

Without a trusty Clubcard, Tesco’s basket totalled £152.59, just a mere two pence behind Sainsbury’s Nectar prices at £152.57.

Health officials have warned of a Salmonella outbreak that could be deadly and has already hospitalised five people. Twenty people have fallen ill, including 13 children, in the “small outbreak” being investigated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Cases have been found in the North West of England, the West Midlands, the South West and the East of England since February.

The East Midlands, the North East, London, and the South East all recorded a case each, with a further two in Northern Ireland and Wales, and one in Scotland. Salmonella is a common bacterial infection that causes food poisoning. It is typically contracted by eating raw or uncooked food, particularly meat, poultry and eggs, or other foods that have been contaminated.

While it usually isn’t life-threatening, it can be dangerous for certain individuals, especially infants, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In severe cases, Salmonella can spread to the bloodstream and cause complications that can be fatal if not treated quickly with antibiotics, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Gauri Godbole, deputy director of gastrointestinal infections at the UKHSA, said: “UKHSA is investigating a small outbreak of Salmonella and no cases have been identified since March 2025.

“Gastrointestinal bacteria, such as Salmonella, can be spread from person to person as well as from food, so anyone with diarrhoea or vomiting should wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom and avoid handling food or preparing food for others where possible.”
